The definitive cross-dressing heroine list
Down with long posts!

I'm not going to make you all cross-eyed today, trying to read my rants, but I do want your help. Over on Smart Bitches, I said the following:

I have to admit, I have a real weakness for cross-dressing heroine stories. (I know!) But it just cracks me up to get into the hero’s PoV where he’s freaking out and fretting over his feelings for his young ("male") ward, assistant, secretary, cabin boy...bring it all on; I find that shit hilarious.

Turns out a lot of ladies feel the same way. People then started listing all the books I need to read where the heroine starts out in man-drag, and I am wondering what gems I've missed. So I decided to compile the ultimate TBR list. Help me out, please! List your picks in the comments and I'll assemble it here as our go-to resource for when we're jonesing for pussy-pretending-to-have-a-penis.

PS - I saw She's the Man, twice. (I know!)

There's one, I can't for the life of me remember the name or author, but the heroine is looking to get revenge on the clan that wiped out hers. She dresses as a guy and ends up a paige for one fo the enemy. She can throw knives, and theres a good sceen where she tries to knick his peter thru the kilt with a knife. The hero can't help having feelings for the boy and is driving himself crazy over it. He acutally resigns himself to homogeity, only to discover that he is really a she. I loved it, but I just can't remember anything but the basica plot. It's maddening.

Man, that sounds good. I wish you knew the title. Let's see. Rummaging through the comments on SB, the following should be added to the list:

Seize the Fire - Laura Kinsale
The Prince of Midnight - Laura Kinsale
The Dream Hunter - Laura Kinsale
Almost a Gentleman - Pam Rosenthal
Seduced - Virginia Henley

Gentle Rogue was also suggested but as I recall, he knew she was a woman all along, which eliminates all the fun, angsty, "OMG, I'm gay!" on the part of the hero.

Sorry, I don't have any (aside from really liking the movie Victor Victoria-mmm, James Garner!). I just like your comments over on SB and thought I'd say hi.

So hi. :-)

Hi December!

I wanted to visit your blog too to return the favor, but when I clicked on your profile I was overwhelmed by the choices. If you tell me where to post, I will but... so... many...blogs...

Oops! It's just the "December Quinn, Erotic Romance Writer" one. I'm something of a blogaholic and keep agreeing to join other people's blogs and write stuff over there too.

I need a good twelve-step program.

Not to get all highbrow, but Twelfth Night and As You Like It for me are the ones (I'm not being snooty, I just don't know any others!).

I mean, come on. In 12th, you have a male actor playing a female character who disguises herself as male.

In ASYI, you have a male actor playing a female who in the play pretends to be male, and then finds her boyfriend whom she does a little role-playing with and pretends to be his girlfriend, which is in reality her, on some level...so we have a man playing a woman playing a man playing a woman.

Just doesn't get weirder than that.

My Lady Notorious by Jo Beverley.

My mind is a sieve so I won't try to synopsize. I just remember that I enjoyed it, the guy in it was hot, and he had kind of a clothing fetish, which was interesting. If I'm remembering correctly.

I remembered it! Finally! Yeah, I have been wracking my brain all day, but my pseudo-OCD has paid off! The book is Lady of the Knight by Jackie Ivie!!!

*does the dance of joy*

Now I can stop thinking about it! Whew!

Woohoo! I hope Candy doesn't blog about it. I emailed her asking for help.

Georgette Heyer's the Corinthian - classic!

Okay, the list is current. I thinkg there must be more titles, though, so ask your friends if they know of any. I want all man-drag, all the time!

I used to love watching Just One of the Guys and The Pirate Movie. As for books... Well, at the beginning of The Beekeeper's Apprentice there's some confusion, but other than that nothing is coming to mind.

How about "Ashes In The Wind" by Kathleen Woodiwiss? The heroine disguises herself as a boy to travel safely in the Civil-War era South. Used to be my all-time favorite book when I was a teenager...before I discovered Nora Roberts.

The list is updated. I'm still trying to remember other titles. But ones I really want to read now are The Switch and Almost a Gentleman.

Sadly I've read most of this list already. *sniffs*

Shield of Three Lions, by Pamela Kaufman
It doesn't seem like a romance in the beginning, but it gets there eventually. Plus, the heroine (who's 13) is propositioned by King Richard III while in drag (he's gay, natch). It's awesome and full of disgusting Middle Ages bodily functions.

I know it was written for pre-teens, but Tamora Pierce's the Lioness Quartet was what originally got me started on this theme when I was younger. (Don't forget Disney's Mulan)

Also Velvet Song by Jude Deveraux.
