workshop wednesday - contests
On April 17th, Guide comes out. To celebrate I'm going to run a contest. Before I decide what, though, I'm hoping ya'll will help me. My last contest was a big success and I wound up with 100+ comments.

Your part is simple. What's your favorite kind? Book giveaway? Jewelry? Gift certificates? Do you prefer a random drawing, a meme, or to answer questions? Help me out in comments please, so I know what you like best. I'm kind of a noob at this.

Gift certificates are good... and I do prefer random drawings. :)

Books and/or gift certificates. And I think the random drawing gets the most responses.

I think you'll save yourself a lot of trouble and postage if you offer gift certificates, and most people seem to prefer them anyway.

Random drawing, yes. I usually try to have readers do something silly or funny to be entered.

I was thinking about this (I want your opinions on it):

I put up a picture on my blog. To enter the contest, you come up with a caption for it. Funny is the goal, but any caption will do. Just putting a caption in comments enters you in the contest. If you BLOG about my contest, you get entered a second time. It's a random drawing, and I'll put all the names in a bowl and have my seven year old son draw the winner.

People who do blog about the contest will have a small advantage, but I won't have people entering ten or twenty times.

Prize is a $50 Amazon gift certificate and a free copy of Guide.

Whatcha think?

Gift certificate! Though free books are nice, too. Thanks for asking ;-)

Oh, love the caption idea!

LOL! I think the "Blog about it" catch is freakin' brilliant. Talk about generating buzz! And the $50 GC virtually insures your name is gonna tear through the blogosphere.

Verra clever, lass, VERRA clever!

And thank you for keeping the caption part of the contest a random drawing. I am SOOOO gawd-awful at those things! GAK!

i always like participation type contests just because they encourage a level of engagement and get them there creative juices flowing - so I'm loving the caption idea as well as PRing the hell out of it.

oh hey QB - didn't see you sitting next to me. heh!

It sounds like this is good idea.

I'm thinking I'll start it on April 10th and run it for a whole week until the April 17th release date to give people plenty of time to get their caption done and/or blog about it, so they can enter again. It should be said, even if somebody has 10 blogs and they put the contest on all 10, they only get 1 extra entry, hehe.

Oh, that was my thought too, QB. I want people to have fun writing the captions but not stress about whether it's "good". I just want to put some smiles on people's faces.

To that end I guarantee the picture I choose will have a monkey in it somewhere. I love monkeys.

Copy of Guide, that's what I want. Cheap for you, fun for me!

(The Amazon cert is icing on the cake, but I'd enter just for the book.)

Caption idea sounds great...

I like random drawings best... and the caption idea sounds like fun. ^_^

Like Erica, I want a copy of Guide. And I swear, I thought of that before I read her comment, not after.

I like the caption idea, too.

you might this amusing - Stak is doing a contest too - only he's going to tattoo the winner's art on his ass - i mean deltoid. Heh.
Not that you wanna tattoo the winner on your ass...do you?

I love your idea, Ann(ie), I want a book and a gift cert!

And I can write a caption, sure I can.

Blogger Ann(ie) said...
Oh dear, I'll never have a tattoo. I am terrified of needles.

I'm so glad everyone likes this idea. In less than a week I'll kick things off. Now I just need to find the perfect monkey picture...

Somehow, my contests manage to sell books, but when it comes to actually entering for the prizes, no one ever does. ::is sad::

Maybe people have forgotten the contest by the time they finish the book.

I'd offer gift certificates and stuff, but I like to be unique. Maybe it's too much to ask.
