New diversions
First, I'd like to thank everyone who commented last week. I actually feel a bit humbled by the number of people who showed up to congratulate me. No, I didn't spend the week celebrating. I have kids and they get sick, and viruses don't time their arrival for when it's convenient, unfortunately.

But my husband did bring me so many flowers that it took three vases to contain them all. He's proud of me. *silly grin*

A number of you are asking when my Touch books are coming out. Truth is, I don't know just yet. We're still working that out with Anne, but as soon as I know, I'll post my release dates. Anyhow, enough book-y stuff for the time being.

For the past year, I've had a very finite number of shows I can be arsed to watch every week. First it was Bones, Supernatural, and Monk. Then USA (I think it's USA?) added Psych to the lineup.

I love this show. It's Shawn and Gus's comic chemistry that keeps me coming back week after week. But I even like Lassiter and Jules. And Shawn's mega-control freak dad, Henry (played by Corbin Bernsen of LA Law fame) is pretty funny sometimes too.

So the number of shows I watch per week went up to four. I could handle that, right? That's not hard to keep track of. Well, then Bones and Supernatural went on hiatus. But it's not on the same schedule as the summer break you get in the States. I have no idea when these shows will resume and start season three. I think maybe sometime in March.

Anyway, my husband starts trolling for new TV shows. This is never a good idea because if he gets me hooked, then I have to watch it every single week. I am not a casual TV watcher. This is why I make it a point to limit my TV viewing. Witness my past addictions to weird and random shows from Barney Miller to M*A*S*H to Angel to the X-Files. In recent years I've done really well in preventing my TV addiction from becoming overwhelming.

However, since we were down two shows that we normally watch together, I agreed to some experimentation. So now we're watching Jericho. I didn't know it was a CBS show initially. We watch it on AXN. But it's seriously pretty good. It's a post-apocalyptic show (which was all I needed to know in order to sell me on it). I'm still waiting for the zombies from the radiation-poisoning, but surely they'll come in time. I mean, can you really do a post-apocalyptic show without zombies? That's what I thought. This show is scary in a low-key, what-would-we-do-if-someone-bombed-the-US? sort of way.

The next new show that I'm really liking is Torchwood. This is a Doctor Who spinoff, developed by the BBC. Frankly I've never watched Doctor Who. All I really know about DW is that he wears a long scarf in one incarnation. But Torchwood, set in Cardiff, is enough of its own animal and has a clear enough setup that you don't need to be a Who-file. We watch it on People+Arts every Tuesday night.

As if that's not bad enough...we're both Matthew Perry fans. Chandler, from Friends? We tried to support his lackluster movie career, and when we heard he had a new show (and Warner started showing it here) we had to watch it. Sigh. I wanted to hate it, honestly. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip?

I was so hoping it would suck. But I love it. It's clever, great comedic timing, layered characterizations... which means, of course, it will be canceled, so I won't have to worry about the addiction.

ACK! EDIT: I forgot about Heroes. This show is beyond amazing, and we actually plan our Friday nights around it (when it's on). "Gotta be home by 9, Heroes is on tonight." I could write a whole post about this show and its colossal awesomeness, but I'll save the fangirl gushing. Suffice to say, we love this show too (but it's on hiatus at the moment, which is why I forgot it).

That leaves us gearing up for yet another show that I'm hearing is fantastic. Burn Notice. Yet another USA show. I swear, they make the best cable TV shows out there. Sorry, I don't watch anything on HBO or Showtime. Those shows may be awesome too, but I can't swear to it.

So we've been hearing great things about Burn Notice, and it begins here in October. It has Bruce Campbell in it. I mean, my God. I have to watch it. I'm a huge Bruce Campbell fan -- even more so since Bubba Ho-tep, only the best horror-comedy ever made!

Now here's the problem (and it makes my brain hurt). Bones = Tuesdays, 10pm. Supernatural = Tuesday, 10pm. No problem so far, right? We have a TiVo, so we record one, and then watch it right after the other show finishes up. But just wait.

Torchwood = Tuesdays, 10pm. Now there's a problem. But it gets worse. Burn Notice = Tuesday, 10pm. *headdesk* When the first two shows come back from hiatus, we are so screwed. (But maybe they'll be staggered so we can just alternate? Maybe all four will never be running at the same time?!) Yeah, right. That'd just be too lucky.

Why TUESDAY?! The rest of the week, we've got nothing to watch, practically. Is this some kind of cosmic joke? (Is it possible to hook up multiple TiVOs to the same TV?) How would you guys solve this? These are all must-watch shows! What are your must-watch shows? And what would you do if they were all on at the same time, on the same night?

HALP!

My fiancé had the same thought about Studio 60 when it premiered on NBC: "It's so good, and it's like they're writing it expressly for me. It's bound to be canceled."

He always assumes that if he absolutely adores a TV show, it won't last.

We watch a lot of shows, and our DVRs can record only two shows at a time. We can usually juggle the shows around OK because some networks will play a new episode twice in the same day, but if things get really tight and way too overlapped, he'll record two shows at one time, and I'll record another two shows. Then he'll come over and watch what he missed.

Not sure how we'll solve things when we move back in together. We may just have to subscribe to having two DVR boxes.

As for Tuesday, it's a notoriously slow day everywhere. That's why there are always Tuesday specials like Taco Tuesdays, Dollar Tuesdays, and the like. People don't go out to restaurants or movies, and maybe they don't watch much TV either. Hell if I know what people do on Tuesday because there are never any crowds outside the house, and there's hardly anything to watch on TV inside.

I got hooked on Psych after just one episode. Shawn and Gus play off each other beautifully!

Jericho is my can't miss show!

Your SO has good taste in shows, April. From what I can tell, Studio 60 has already been canceled. What a bummer, huh?

Susan, you watch Jericho? It's just starting here (third or fourth episode) but I'm liking it so far. Very different.

I don'y watch much tv. I prefer to read.. Most of what is on tv is junk, interspersed with a lot of commercials.

I feel your pain. I watch so very little television that I usually forget that the shows I DO watch are even on.

Except for Wednesdays. At some point there will be 3 must see shows on Wednesdays-- American Idol (what can I say), Lost, and Project Runway. And AI and Lost are always screwing around with their length, start time etc. and making it even more confusing.

So many good shows.. so little time..

Wow, I don't care about the shows right now, I just read last week's news. Yowza! Very happy for you!

Oh man, Bev, we used to watch American Idol. But after the Clay Aiken season, we sort of lost interest. They also don't show it here anyway. We get Latin American Idol instead.

No doubt, Angela. I need some kind of technical solution.

Thanks, Ciar.

We're finally gonna go out this weekend and celebrate. It's been crazy around here. But we're definitely on for dinner and a movie Friday night, sans children. Woohoo!

We're going to see the incredibly romantic Resident Evil 3.

I'm still waiting for Battlestar Galactica to come back on. I watched the last episode, they brought supposedly dead/lost chic Starbuck back, I got all excited then the show ends with this message following it: No more episodes until 2008. *_* WTF?!

(Sorry to bore you with my Nerd Rage, but there it is.)

In the meantime I'm keeping myself semi-entertained by watching Doctor Who. Oh! Oh! It's got me itching to check out Torchwood. Almost forgot about that! The last two episodes of Dr. Who has had references to Torchwood in it... naturally I'll be hooked.

I'm feeling you. My day here is Wednesdays 9pm I have to chose between Criminal Minds (great for writing), the new Bionic Woman, checking out Private Practice (the Grey's Anatomy Spin off) and Kitchen Nightmares (I find Gordon Ramsey oddly compelling and I watched the BBC version of the series all summer.)

I love Psych, and while I disliked Monk at first because I felt it was silly that he could see things other people couldn't I realized it's because he sneaks into people's houses and such and often sees whole situations that the cops aren't privy to. Now I dig it.

Blogger Ann Aguirre said...
Michele, Monk has been on the decline for me this last season. The writing isn't as smart and they've dumbed down the show a lot to over-focus on his idiosyncracies. Now, they might spend 45 minutes on his phobias and then btw, he solves the case. I miss the old days when he managed to function in spite of his problems. It was ...inspiring in a way. And his love story with Trudy, told in flashbacks, was one of the most poignant I've ever seen on TV.

Now they've turned him into a Rainman style crime-solver, and I hate it. Plus it's a Jessica Fletcher sort of thing. Wherever Monk goes someone dies, whereas he used to be called in to help with a case. Which makes much more sense. Sigh.

I miss the old episodes.

I'm eagerly awaiting the new season of Jericho. I keep checking the CBS site and it doesn't say when the new episodes will air.

With our DVR we can tape two shows and watch a third, so we're pretty well covered. Plus we have VCRs on other TVs if there are multiple tapings that need to go on. Mike must watch his races. I must watch my shows and movies.

My current shows are Prison Break, Heroes on Monday, Survivor (an old family standby) and now Grey's Anatomy on Thursday. Still waiting for Jericho and Lost to come back. Nothing else is a must-see for me anymore.

Jenny, my husband got us watching a MvW marathon, and I've been cured of my aversion. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to watch it, but it's quite a bit better than it sounds.

We tried watching BG, Cora, but they moved the show around so much, we lost track of it, and we finally gave up. I think Andres means to get the DVDs and watch it from start to finish when there isn't anything else on.

Hm, we intersect on Heroes and Jericho. I'm really like the latter, the more I watch it. It has a layered feeling like Heroes, where you know you're only seeing a tiny portion of the big picture.

Belated congrats!

Love Heroes ! That show is amazing. It is the only show I will not miss for anything in the world.

Doctor Who is actually better than Torchwood - with the added bonus that if your children are school age they can watch it with you (if that's an added bonus...)

It's worth catching if you get the chance. (The recent series, that is: those with either Christopher Eccleston or David Tennant as the Doctor.)

I have Bubba Ho-Tep on DVD. XD

I also love Campbell in the Evil Dead.

He had this show..."Jack of all Trades", I think. I used to stay up until midnight to watch it when I was but a young thing.

I thought Burn Notice was going to suck from the previews(also, 'cause I was upset with the Dresden Files being canceled, which was on Sci-fi and that and USA are branches of the Universal network), but it's been pretty awesome.

So awesome, I don't illegally download the episodes and rob the makers of royalties, and instead wait for it to come out on DVD.

Marianne, they've moved DW so much that we lost track of it, and I hate leaping around non-sequentially in a series, whether it's book or TV.

Gwyneth, I am with you on Heroes. I can't wait for season 2 to start here.

L, I watched the first Burn Notice last night. LOVED it!

And we watched Jack of All Trades too! Just freakin' adore Bruce Campbell. You have BH-t on DVD? That's awesome!
