13 comments about my urban fantasy

So I have a new crit partner. Her name is Angie Fox, and she writes for Dorchester. Her fantastic debut, The Accidental Demon Slayer, comes out next summer. The book is described as, "Mary Janice Davidson meets Julie Kenner in this hilarious paranormal romance."

What's more, she has a blurb from Stephanie Rowe: "Angie Fox has penned a hilarious, high-octane, paranormal caper. The Accidental Demon Slayer is a highly original frolic filled with brilliantly created characters, countless magical surprises and marvelous plot twists."

Here's an interview where she talks about this book, which one agent said "does for witches what Shaun of the Dead did for zombies."

To take my mind off the latest mystery making the rounds with agents, I decided to write something completely different, a funny paranormal romance where I could build my own world and make up my own rules. I fell in love with the idea of a preschool teacher who is forced to run off with a gang of geriatric biker witches and THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER was born.

Instead of a 20-page plot outline, I had a 5-page list of ideas, one of which included “but little did they know, all the Shoney’s are run by werewolves.” Instead of following the rules, I broke a few. Instead of painstakingly writing over the course of a year, I giggled my way through the book and had a complete manuscript in five months.

How awesome is that?! And I get to read it before any of you. Mwahahaha!

EDIT: Angie has had an unbelievable day! So I'm adding two more blurbs she's received today.

"A demonically delightful paranormal romp. I didn't want it to end!"

--Michelle Rowen, author of Fanged & Fabulous

"As hilarious as it is thrilling, THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER by Angie Fox is one "h-e-double hockey sticks" of a ride.

Like grandma on her hog, I tore through this book at a break-neck speed and loved every minute of it. Quirky characters and hilarious situations make THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER by Angie Fox a devilishly, wicked-fun ride.

Angie Fox "kills" with the humor and quirky, yet sympathetic characters in THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER. It's devilishly good fun!"

--NYT bestselling author Tate Hallaway

Did I mention there were five agents dying to sign this woman? And I was lucky enough to have her look at my upcoming urban fantasy release for '09. Sweet!

Without further ado, here are 13 things she said:

1. "I can see why this book was snatched up in a pre-empt. I loved it! Seriously loved it."

2. "I love Corine’s voice. Her humor is just outstanding and is balanced well with action/mystery/magic. I ate this story up."

3. "Chance is delicious. And Jesse. Oh wait, that’s a problem isn’t it? Well, for Corine anyway."

4. "You have a real gift for creating memorable secondary characters."

5. (Over a certain line) "I spit Diet Coke onto my computer keyboard. Thanks a lot."

6. "There are sparks with both guys... I can see a (love) scene between Chance and Corine as being utterly amazing when it happens. And when it happens, I think your readers will root for him even more."

7. "I think you are going to do very, very well with this series."

8. "You have an outrageously compelling book."

9. "Your locations were wonderful."

10. "This book is truly different from the others I’ve read in the genre and that only means good things for you."

11. "I love Corine."

12. "TNFKaGT rocks!"

13. "You are brilliant and I hope you know it."

To quote Goofy, "Aw, garsh."

She also gave me wonderful feedback identifying stuff I need to work on, so when the book releases in its polished form, you'll need to thank Angie.

arrghhhh did I hear right, TNFKaGT
wont be released until "09" ? It seems I'm wishing my life away wanting future release dates to get here sooner.
Well at least Grimspace is almost here. :)
I really hope you'll have TNFKaGT ARC contests/giveaways. (hint, hint ) I cant wait to read it.

Hehe, yeah, I'm afraid the first book has a tentative release date in the first quarter of '09. I don't have concrete dates yet.

And yeah, Grimspace will be out soon. I'm totally stoked about that.

"You have a real gift for creating memorable secondary characters."

This is very true. That was the first thing to strike me about your writing when I read the early draft of Alibi.

Congrats on such great comments! I'll be sure to put a note on my calendar to buy this one! I'm intrigued already.

That was AWESOME, Janet.

So tell me, would you say diet cock tastes great or is less filling?

Finding the right CP's can make all the difference. Reinforce what you love about writing, and give you a smack upside the head when something needs to be fixed. What great comments! Those are the kind to print out and stick above your monitor to look at when you fall into the "this is crap" dolldrums in a first draft. Excellent!

Rar! Comment glitch wiped me out. Now I can't remember what I was going to write after reading about DIET COCK! Hehehehe! ^_^

Blogger Lori said...
Congrats....sounds like a real winner. Happy TT and thanks for stopping by.

Blogger Ann Aguirre said...
I hope it will be, Lori. I don't know how I'm gonna wait until '09 to see it on shelves!

Fantastic that you had fun with this MS and got such a GREAT response to it!

Blogger Nap Warden said...
Congratulations! I'm glad you got such great response!!!

Blogger Angie Fox said...
This book is fantastic. It's one of those reads that, as you get into it, you get excited because you know you're going to have a great time. I just love that feeling.

And I will tell everyone about "the" Diet Coke line, with Ann's permission. It's a zinger (like everything else in the book). But this one caught me completely off guard.

Blogger Angie Fox said...
And, Janet, I'm convinced you have a dirty mind - which isn't a bad thing at all!

Blogger Jennifer Y. said...
Well, I am now intrigued about the book! Great response!

Blogger Ann Aguirre said...
Hm, you know, I thought about telling them what line made you spit diet coke, but I wasn't sure if it constituted a spoiler. I tried to avoid those. But without the context, I tend to think not.

So if you want the honors, Angie, go for it! :D

And thanks again for reading TNFKaGT.

Oh, plus, Angie has some more exciting news. She's gotten blurbs from Tate Hallaway and Michelle Rowen today! I'll let her share those too if she wants. Very hot quotes.

Blogger Angie Fox said...
Yee hee! I get to share.

Said by Corine as they're trying to organize a chaotic night:
“We’re having chicken noodle casserole and then we’re raising the dead.”

Blogger Angie Fox said...
It was a kick to open my email this morning and find Tate Hallaway's blurb for The Accidental Demon Slayer. Tate is one of my favorite authors. She writes the Garnet Lacey series, about a witch who is on the run and happens to fall for an uber hot vampire, who (and I smile every time I think of this part) has a guard ghost at his house. It's funky, it's unique and the worldbuilding is first rate.

Anyhow, my agent and editor both approached people for blurbs, but I really wanted to see if Tate would read the book, so without any official contacts, I went ahead and emailed her myself (stalker-style). Not only was she gracious, she took time out to read. This is what she said:

As hilarious as it is thrilling, THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER by Angie
Fox is one "h-e-double hockey sticks" of ride.

Like grandma on her hog, I tore through this book at a break-neck
speed and loved every minute of it. Quirky characters and hilarious
situations make THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER by Angie Fox a devilishly,
wicked-fun ride.

Angie Fox "kills" with the humor and quirky, yet sympathetic
characters in THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER. It's devilishly good fun!

Made my week.

Blogger Ann Aguirre said...
I think that might be my favorite line in the whole book.

Yay, Angie! Your quote from Michelle Rowen is wonderful too.

Blogger Angie Fox said...
Yes. I was so happy to get Michelle Rowen's quote. Heck, I want to BE Michelle Rowen.
