The Grimspace Publicity Juggernaut
January 28th, 2008

KICK-BUTT CONTEST! Answer five questions, earn chances to win fabulous prizes.

The official GRIMSPACE quiz*

Ever wondered what job you’d hold down on a star ship?

Yes!

Uhm, no… *shifty look*

Banana Hammock!

Prize packages

  • Grand Prize: $100 gift card from Barnes and Noble
  • First runner up: $50 gift certificate from Amazon
  • Second runner up: a handcrafted Mexican necklace
  • Third runner up: $25 gift card (or egift card) from Bath & Body Works
  • Fourth runner up: Signed copy of Grimspace

Five winners. Big prizes. What do you have to do to get in on this?

Rules for entry for people with a blog:

  • Step 1: Take the quiz, and then copy the code from MY blog at the top of your post. Grimspace Contest Code. Please don’t use the code that comes from Quiz Soup. It’s rather generic.
  • Step 2: Post your results from the quiz in your blog entry. This can be as simple as typing “I got (blank).” You don’t have to copy the whole description, but you can if you want.
  • Step 3: Add something like “Check out the prizes on Ann’s blog” along with a link here. Publish blog post!
  • Step 4: Leave your link in comments, letting me know you’re done.

For those who don’t have blogs, here’s what you do to enter:

  • Step 1: Take the quiz and post your results in comments.
  • Step 2: Tell at least one other person about the contest.

Feel free to ask any questions in comments. Please note, since the contest prizes are sizable, I do expect you to adhere to the rules. If you don’t, I simply won’t count your entry, so it might be worth your time to double-check. This post will be sticky until Grimspace releases on February 26 and I announce the winners.

Contest is now closed. Winners announced shortly.

  1. *kicking rock* I’m sad I cannot enter this contest.

*throwing confetti* I’m glad I won an ARC of Grimspace–and uber happy it’s already making its way to me as I type *happy dance*

(I’m a pilot–which is not surprising, being a divorced mom of two and all that)

I’m posting the links and other stuff to a readers’ forum I participate in.

I wish you GREAT luck, Ann!

  3. That was fun. I don’t have a blog, so here you go:

    Your Result: Doctor

You always liked science, never thought it would wind up shipping you off to the stars. Your parents wanted you to get a good job at a cushy private hospital, but nooo, you had to have a touch of adventure and see uncharted planets along the way. You want to help people, but you often feel like you’re more of a combat medic than a true doctor these days. Your crew can’t seem to stay out of trouble, and it irks you, the way they assume you’ll be able to clean up any mess they make. Lucky for them you’re the patient type.

  4. 3
  5. Azteclady, you can enter this contest. In fact, you just did. Step 1 is post your result in comments; you got pilot. Step 2 is tell at least one other person about the contest; you’re posting a link in a reader’s forum. Done and done.

I’ll be honest; if you win fourth runner up, I’ll probably re-draw since you already have a copy of the book on the way, but there’s no reason you can’t try for one of the other prizes.

Thanks, Cathy. I had fun making the quiz.

  9. No one reads my blog (including me) :-) because I delete my old blog (trying to not get dooced!) and since then I haven’t been inspired. But I loved your quiz! I’m sending it to a few friends…

    Michelle (in Oregon)

    Your Result: Jumper

Grimspace navigator? Dude, you’re like interstellar royalty. You’re charismatic and possess a forceful personality. You’re used to having power and you don’t hesitate to use it. You also love to take risks. If it has danger attached, you’re first in line, and no, you’re not wearing a safety helmet. You live for the thrills, don’t care about life expectancy, and expect to go out with a bang.

    LOL — excellent!

  15. That’s a hugely inaccurate quiz. I got pilot. Don’t drive, have failed my test three times, & this is only a good thing for the rest of humanity as I used to plow into lamp posts with my pram every time I took the baby out.
If I was a pilot, it’d be the shortest interstellar jaunt ever. Out of the spaceport and straight into the sun.

And I so don’t have anything of the control-freak in my nature. My middle name is laissez faire. (Something like that: I was in set 4 for French, so I may just have asked the way to the train station…)

  16. 9
  17. Most of these prizes require no explanation, but I’m going to add something about the handmade necklace. A family friend designs jewelry; she has an upscale little shop in the plaza near our house. Her pieces are gorgeous.

Here’s one she made for me, for instance. It’s heavy silver that looks almost like black pearl, has crystal accents. I always get compliments when I wear this piece. Your necklace will be unique, designed just for you. I will consult you about color preferences before ordering from the designer.

  18. 10
  19. I also got pilot, Now I’m off to tell all my cyber friends about the quiz and contest.

  20. 11
  21. I won’t enter the contest but I did take the quiz. heh. I’m a comm tech person. It says that I prefer computers to people… and that is sometimes VERY true. Pegged me pretty much right on. Cool stuff, Ann. I’ll post some linkage for ya.

  22. 12
  23. I got Pilot! And I’ve posted this in my book review and contest blog - A Book Blogger’s Diary

The prizes are awesome, but I love nothing more than to read new authors, so I’d have posted this regardless. :)

    Thanks!!

  29. I don’t have a blog but here is my result:

    Your Result: Pilot

You’ll be guiding the ship through the stars, whether you work on a slow old freight, a flashy passenger vessel, or a quick little cutter that can outrun any pirates in the sky. Maybe you don’t want to admit it, but you also have a touch of control freak in your nature. You feel responsible for other people, even when it doesn’t make sense. That comes from having the crew depend on you when your hands are on the ship’s controls.

    Neville

  31. What a cool idea for a contest! Love it!

    Gwyneth

  32. 17
  33. My results said I was a mechanic. I posted the contest on my blog. http://conversingwithcrystal.blogspot.com

  34. 18
  35. I cannot take credit, Gwyneth. Jane, from Dear Author, came up with the idea for a viral marketing campaign for Nalini Singh’s release, Slave to Sensation. When I saw how well it worked, I decided then and there I’d do something like it for my NY release. So credit where it’s due to Jane.

  36. 19
  37. I got - Mechanic.

Btw, I just received your ARC on Saturday! Thanks!

  38. 20
  39. Excellent, that was fast. Sherry sent those out for me, so yours isn’t signed. If you’d like it signed, let me know and I’ll mail you a bookplate you can stick on the inside cover. I don’t know if you save ARCs or pass them on.

Sidenote– you aren’t entered in the contest, Angela, until you post something on your blog. But if you just took the quiz for fun, that’s cool.

Other entrants — please don’t forget to use the code from my blog in your post and provide a link back to my blog.

    I’m the pilot.
In the grand mode of Sulu, Wash and Han Solo.

  88. 45
  89. Of those you named, Wash is my favorite. One of these days, I need to watch the whole Firefly season. People who liked Firefly are gonna love Grimspace.

  90. 46
  91. I’m looking forward to reading Grimspace. I’ve posted at my blog:

    http://readingetc.wordpress.com/2008/01/29/grimspace-contest/

  92. 47
  93. Even more reason to look forward to Grimspace! Firefly is one of my favorite TV series–I wish it had lasted longer.

  94. 48
  95. I came here from SBTB.

I don’t have a blog, so here’s my results from the quiz:

    Your Result: Doctor

You always liked science, never thought it would wind up shipping you off to the stars. Your parents wanted you to get a good job at a cushy private hospital, but nooo, you had to have a touch of adventure and see uncharted planets along the way. You want to help people, but you often feel like you’re more of a combat medic than a true doctor these days. Your crew can’t seem to stay out of trouble, and it irks you, the way they assume you’ll be able to clean up any mess they make. Lucky for them you’re the patient type.

This quiz has been taken 203 times.
This result has been seen 52 times.
This result has been shown 26% of the time.

  96. 49
  97. Hi Ann,
This is one awesome contest. I’m a pilot. This is my link:
    http://limecello.blogspot.com
I don’t know what happened to the formatting. It looks perfect when I use it in my eljay, but I wanted to put it on my blogspot. So, hopefully I’ll figure it out/get help/change it to lj. I really have spent nearly an hour trying to figure it out. It hates me.

  98. 50
  99. I’ve posted on my reading journal @
http://janicu.vox.com/library/post/ann-aguirre-grimspace-contest.html . Vox doesn’t seem to like the radio buttons so I’m giving up on that, but the rest of it came up. And I got Jumper (which I am not sure is right, but it does sound cool). Fun contest. P.S. I came in through Dear Author.

  100. 51
  101. I’ve linked it to my wee little blog, http://lijuun.livejournal.com/70787.html

And the fact that Firefly fans should love it? Oh, mama. Those are the magic words. I actually just spent the past weekend re(re-re-re)watching all the episodes, and then the movie. So you caught me in the perfect mood to try and twist all my friends’ arms into buying the book, too.

But what the heck is a Jumper? Despite my love for Firefly, I’m more of a fantasy nerd, so I’m honestly lost on that one. Sounds good, though. I’ll take it.

  102. 52

  104. 53
  105. Me? Apparently I’m a doctor (me and 28% of everyone else). I have no blog, so I’m putting this up on my Facebook Wall and emailing a friend who likes SF… I think she’d enjoy your books.

  109. I don’t have a blog, but would like to enter the contest.

  111. http://mikasteelelell.livejournal.com/309086.html

  112. 57
  113. took the quiz, posted a medium-long message on my blog, but *sigh* i’m still a total tech-doof - i don’t understand about how to link or do trackbacks properly. maybe it’s because i SO wouldn’t belong on a cutting edge space ship that i get the feeling i’d really enjoy the story…

  114. 58
  115. I’m a pilot.

    off to tell others :-)

  116. 59
  117. I wish I had a publicity juggernaut. I need one desperately! My interest in promotion these days is nil. I don’t know how you have the requisite energy to do all you do.

  118. 60
  119. I took the quiz and the result said Doctor which shocked me. It was interesting though and totally different. I will be telling others, thanks.

  120. 61
  121. Ann, What a fun quizz and contest! I took the quizz, and I am a Jumper! I have been soooo looking forward to this book coming out! Told my BF about the book & contest. I work in a bookstore and love passing along info about new books coming out. Have a good one! Barb

  122. 62
  123. I got pilot. Hmm, I’m a control freak at heart. But never thought of being a pilot. I’ll pass this on to my friends.

    Denise

  124. 63
  125. Ooh, I’m a jumper! Sweet! It sounds super fun

I posted the results and all in my blog. :)

  126. 64
  127. I put it up on my webpage, and my blog, and my myspace page!

  133. no public blog, sadly. still, here i am! (and i told three friends, because I’m an over-achiever like that.)

  134. 68
  135. …I so fail.

    Late night and little sleep?

    I got Doctor.

  136. 69
  137. As y’all have doubtless noticed, I tinkered with comments a little bit yesterday. Now mine will be in a blue frame, so people can find my replies easier.

I also managed to get numbers working on the posts. This will make it a lot simpler for me to locate randomly drawn winners.

  138. 70
  139. I see the blue frames but I don’t see the numbers…

  140. 71
  141. Really? They’re tiny, upper left, just above each post. I wanted them to look more like the ones on Dear Author, in the far right, but my coding ability doesn’t seem equal to the task.

  142. 72
  143. Ooooooooohhhhhhh oooopppss

    I see them now.

And by the way, I saw your ad at the SBTB–cool, very cool!

  144. 73
  145. Cool, you saw it? I’m pleased with it. Will be up through all of Feb. Hope it motivates people!

  146. 74
  147. I’m on the phone with my S.O., while he’s at the bookstore. He was looking for Grimspace, and pouted when I told him it doesn’t come out until the 26th.

You want to help people, but you often feel like you’re more of a combat medic than a true doctor these days. 188. 95
  189. Yep, I happen to think Franco de Vita is pretty awesome.

I just discovered La 5a Estacion too. I’ve been playing Me Muero all day. What did you think of Reik if you played the video?

  190. 96
  191. I love this! I am a pilot! My blog’s not up yet but I told my co-author and best friend about this!

Thanks and the book sounds incredible!

  193. Apparently I’m a jumper! I like the part about being royalty *s*

I blogged about it here http://yaddayaddayaddablahblahblah.wordpress.com/

  194. 98
  195. Hiya! Blog-thing not working for some reason, and me being ever so patient… (LOL) I think I got Jumper cuz I picked the big pair o boots answer. ;-)

  196. 99
  197. Jumpers are the best!

  198. 100
  199. I’m a mechanic, surprisingly to me, lol. Then again I often have had to figure out how to fix things, though always not successful.

Ann, I came across a promo for your book somewhere and put it right on my wishlist, then Amy’s blog sent me over for this fab contest. Don’t have a blog myself but do have a small private reader’s group and posted it there and a few emails to other reading friends.

  200. 101
  201. Grimspace Contest Code

Great quiz! LOL, pretty right on too!

    Here are my results:

    Your Result: Comm Officer

You never met a language you couldn’t learn. Ironically, you hate serving as translator, but it’s the price you pay for being on the ship. You have a natural, intuitive knack for figuring things out. You’re good at puzzles, decryption, and generally get stuck with all the computer / paperwork that the rest of the crew doesn’t feel like dealing with. Some people might complain, but you’re a bit antisocial anyway, perhaps a bit shy, and you prefer computers to people. If only the rest of these wankers would let you do your job…

  209. Hey Ann! I’m really looking forward to reading this book. I don’t have a blog, but I e-mailed a couple of my friends about the quiz :)

  211. uh…I think I copied the wrong thing…

Here are my results:Your Result: Pilot

You’ll be guiding the ship through the stars, whether you work on a slow old freight, a flashy passenger vessel, or a quick little cutter that can outrun any pirates in the sky. Maybe you don’t want to admit it, but you also have a touch of control freak in your nature. You feel responsible for other people, even when it doesn’t make sense. That comes from having the crew depend on you when your hands are on the ship’s controls.

I e-mailed a couple of my friends about the quiz. I can’t wait to read Grimspace!

  213. “Your Result: Doctor

Lucky for them you’re the patient type.”

I’ve always liked science, but I don’t know if I could be called the patient type!

I don’t have a blog, so I’ve told a couple of my friends about the contest - I guess I didn’t give them much notice, so I hope they’ll have a chance to stop by in time to play. Do you need to see evidence of this, and, if so, how should I document it?

  214. 108
  215. Nope, no need to document. Your word is good.

Bought the book this past weekend at a local B&N in Shreveport, LA. Just browsing and love female leads, so thought I’d give it a try. Didnt know it was so new. Just finished it bout 30 minutes ago and LOVED IT!!! Which is why I am here, had to see what else I could buy that you had written. Thought it could be a stand alone book since all ends got tied, but wanted to know more about Velith. So, I’m terribly happy to know he will be a major part of the next book. Keep up the awesome writing, as you are now on my must read list!!!

  221. Wow, Sarah, thanks so much for the kind words! Other people seem to agree with you. I’ll sample from a review I was just sent this evening:

What I didn’t know was that I would be reminded of another tale in space that I loved with all my heart; Firefly. While Ms. Aguirre’s world has alien races, unlike Mr. Joss Whedon’s Verse, it has the same emotion. I laughed, cried, and cheered…

What follows is a journey through space as well as a journey through Jax’s soul. I will not say anymore because this tale deserves to be experienced firsthand. While it is obvious that this is the start of a series (thank goodness), the ending is extremely satisfying. Fortunately, the wait won’t be too long as Wanderlust is slated for later this year. Brava, Ms. Aguirre, you have put a smile on my face and made me miss Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Wash, Jayne, River, Inarra, and Simon just a little bit less.

Since I know the love people have for Firefly, I can’t imagine a higher compliment! I’ll have to check out this TV show on DVD.
