So I was asked for some book recs, and I haven’t made such a post since September. I figure it’s in the holiday spirit to give away a book. Here are 10 books I’ve enjoyed lately. Oh, I also feel like I should say: This isn’t a best of 2013 list or ranked 1-10 in any fashion. I just put the books I loved on the list as I thought of them.
Comment to enter to win one of these and make sure to offer your own recs for great reading.
Oooo I LOVED These Broken Stars and Untold! Haven’t read Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, but I really want to!
I really loved World After, The Dream Thieves,The Pirate’s Wish, The runaway King and Horde of course! ๐
I have Pirates Wish & World After in my tbr pile, already purchased. So glad you loved two of the books on my list, too! Makes me happy. I’m checking out Runaway King. Oh! I have the first book in my TBR also. Sounds like we’re on the same page, reading wise.
So glad to hear you loved Horde. <3
Ooh! I’ve been dying to read “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”. I’ll have to add your other recs to my TBR list!…Hmm, I always short-wire when giving recs. There are soooo many great books out there. I just finished Slated by Teri Terry and it was really different. I also loved Adele Griffin’s newest novel, Loud Awake and Lost.
I had some issues with a few things in BtD&tDBS but it was nonetheless compulsively readable and addicting. Will be curious to hear your thoughts.
Within the past few months I’ve read and loved the following: Maze Runner Trilogy & it’s prequel (The Kill Order) by James Dashner, Matched Trilogy by Allie Condy (think that’s the author? I forget), Legend Trilogy by Marie Lu, Enclave Trilogy, I finished the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth, and I know there were a few more but my mind has decided to go blank. They’re all great reads!
Wow, you’re quite a prolific reader. Awesome!!
Oh great, thanks Ann for adding to my pile of books to read now that the semester is over. It was already huge as it includes the Nightside series by Simon R Green, the newest in the Nerd books by Vicki Lewis Thompson, and the two in your steampunk noir series. Guess I better get to it. ๐
Oh man, I’m super far behind with Simon Green. My husband loves his books.
I really want to read These Broken Stars. My most recent recommends, books that I’ve been pushing on people are Winger by Andrew Smith and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Loved Fangirl but I thought Eleanor & Park was even better.
Oops, I need to decide when to wrap this contest up. I think Friday around this time would be good. Two days of conversation / book recs!
Ahh!!! I’ve been wanting to read several of these. Great list!!
The only one I’ve read from your list was Stir Me Up. Read that one last week in a matter of a few days. I love J. Lynn’s Wait For You.
Did you like it?
It was okay. It needed more, but the ending was a like a fist pump to chasing dreams and independence when I thought they’d sacrifice too much to be together.
For urban paranormal, this year I liked Written in Red by Anne Bishop and the “Agent of Hel” books by Jacqueline Carey. I always recommend the Toby Daye series by Seanan McGuire! I also liked her Indexing serial, but I wish it had been longer.
For YA, other than Horde (which had me bawling like a baby and so happy with the way it ended), I reaaaaaaally liked the Grisha books by Leigh Bardugo, and on a whim I tried out Poison Princess by Kressley Cole, which was..interesting. I didn’t love it but I liked the way she framed the narrative, so I’d check it out if you’re looking for something a bit different.
Yes, I think Leigh Bardugo’s books are amazing.
I just read Ghost Bride which lived up to its hype. It was fantastic. I followed up with Geek with a Cat Tattoo. Theresa Weir can do more in the novella format than a lot of writers can in a longer novel. It was an incredibly sweet romance in the best ways. I also loved Holly Black’s Coldest Girl in Cold Town. Perdition was outstanding. I have already loaned out my copy.
I enjoy Theresa Weir’s work, too. Need to check out Ghost Bride!
So glad you liked Perdition. ๐
I loved both Some Quiet Place and These Broken Stars as well. I would am very intrigued about Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea!
Thanks so much for hosting a giveaway, and sharing some new finds with your readers at the same time ๐
Oh, adding the ones I haven’t read to my wishlist.
My recs:
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle
100 Days in Deadland by Rachel Aukes
The best books i’ve read recently are perdition and grimspace by you they’ve turned me onto a genre I’ve previously overlooked and also kelley armstrongs omens and exit strategy.
Wow, so happy to hear this!
I still need to read These Broken Stars and Untold! I read Unspoken a few months back and really enjoyed it. There were a lot of great books this year but some of my favorite books that I’d recommend is: The Archived by Victoria Schwab, Vicious by V.E Schwab (same author as the first but adult novel), The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, and the first two books in Shannon Messenger MG series; Keeper of the Lost Cities & Exile.
I keep hearing/reading great things about These Broken Stars, dying to read it. Thank you for the chance, fingers crossed ๐
Same for Stir Me Up, I didn’t know you loved it (I’m always stalking your tweet recs).
My favorite book this year was Undone by Cat Clarke. It was only published in the UK, so I really don’t have many people to discus it with (no one wants to import a book). It was just so raw and amazing. But its going to be published here sometime in 2014. I heard Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is amazing but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.
My Fiancee and I both just finished Horde and were very happy with it. He gets so excited when I bring home any of your books since I introduced him to Enclave. Books I have finished recently that I have adored were Omens by Kelley Armstrong, Solstice by P.J. Hoover and Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. Also love the Agent of Hel series by Jacqueline Carey.
Wow, it’s so cool that you and your fiancee both read my work. I loved Under the Never Sky too!
I agree with Ayesha about J Lynn. I read her YA paranormal before her romance. Stir Me Up catches my eye. I love Tahara Mafi Shatter Me series, must include the novella as well, Rachel Harris. Seven Day Fiance was really good (don’t usually read romance unless paranormal). Wool by Hugh Howey is addictive, in a good way. Deliberately will look at your recs.
I heard these broken stars were amazing and I can’t wait to read it!! I loved untold, horde, scarlet, and champion…so many good books came out this year!!
I’d love to win A Shadow in Summer. As for recommendations, I adore Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series (I think Chimes at Midnight was the last one.) There’s also this great book I’m reading right now called Aftermath…oh, nevermind.
I’ve been so curious about Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea and These Broken Stars. Both are on my wishlist.
Right now I’m doing an audio of Shatter Me and I’ve been enjoying it so far.
I haven’t read any of the books on your list but I’m definitely adding them to my wishlist because I really enjoyed a book you recommended and gave away on Twitter. These are a few of the books I enjoyed so far this year, Beyond Pain by Kit Rocha, Asking For Trouble by Tessa Bailey, Perfect Fling by Carly Phillips and Trust In Me by Dee Tenorio.
Kit Rocha is awesome.
I loved These Broken Stars and Lovely Vicious, such awesome books. I’ve had Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea on my to read list.
My recs would be Reboot by Amy Tintera, All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill and Acid
by Emma Pass. I loved all three books. They were unique and different and couldn’t put them down.
I haven’t had much time to read this past few weeks because of my internship. Between the devil and the Deep Blue sea is still on my TBR! ๐
I’ve always loved Every Storm by Lori Wick. It isn’t YA, and it’s kind of old. ๐
Would love to win a book! Some ones I would recommend that I’ve enjoyed recently are Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight by S.J. Maas. Also the Arcana Chronicle series by Kresley Cole!!!! And anything by Tamora Pierce!!!!
Well besides Horde, I recently read Waterfell by Amalie Howard and it was really good. Looking forward to the next one, and also Teardrop by Lauren Kate. Now I’m reading the Mortal Instruments City of Bones and so far it is really good.
Have not read any of these. Thank you for your recommendations!
I haven’t read any of those. The most recent book I read and really enjoyed was The Immortal Hunter by Lynsay Sands
I loved the Immortal Empire trilogy by Kate Locke. Also enjoyed Ever After (The Hollows book 11 by Kim Harrison.)
I haven’t read any of the books on your list although there are several that are on my TBR list. A few books that I’ve read recently that were really great were Molly Harper’s Hot to Run with a Naked Werewolf (any of her books, really) and the Love and Decay Season One books by Rachel Higginson. I’m also excited to read Andrea Cremer’s new book Snakeroot.
UF Series:
– Perdition
– Horde
– Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews (Magic series)
– Cast in Peril by Michelle Sagara West (From the ‘Cast in’ series)
– Hell Bent: A Broken Magic Novel by Devon Monk
– Shattered Circle by Linda Robertson (Persephone Alcmedi Series)
– Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews (novella)
Romance:
– No Good Duke Goes Unpunished by Sarah McLean
– The Heiress Effect & The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan
– The Luckiest Lady in London by Sherry Thomas
Ohh I forgot these:
– Cold Steel & Cold Fire by Kate Elliot
Those are maybe fantasy with a romantic element? They may be YA too. I’m actually not sure of the classification.
Also before I forget,
– Master of Crows by Grace Craven
This IS fantasy with a romantic element
I loved Master of Crows!!
Ugh please count all this as one post. I’m on my phone and it keeps posting before I finish ๐ Anyway I haven’t read any of your recs but shadow of summer, Cottonwood and these broken stars look interesting. I’ve actually contemplated getting These Broken Stars.
So the above were the best books I read this year.
Thank goodness I have two weeks off. Now you know what I plan on dedicated my time to doing. Some of the best reads of the year?
Behold the Stars by Susan Fanetti (a great motorcycle club book)
Reaver by Larissa Ione (this is my first Lords of Deliverance book, although it is book 5 in the series)
Archangel’s Consort by Nalini Singh (I’m a late comer to this series and I’ve been mesmerized by the dark tone)
Body of Evidence by Rachel Grant (fantastic romantic suspense)
Con & Conjure by Lisa Shearin (I love this fantasy world)
My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster (Great suspense in a steampunk world)
It’s been a great year for reading.
I have been dying to read all of the ones you’ve listed, but alas I am a poor college student lol. I would definitely recommend Splintered and Unhinged by A.G. Howard!
I just bought Splintered. I think that’s the first one.
I would say anything Laini Taylor-Daughter of Smoke and Bone & Days of Blood and Starlight, Leigh Bardugo – Grisha trilogy, Alexandra Bracken -the Darkest Minds and Never Fade, Julie Kagawa -the Eternity Cure. I have Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea on My to read list but going through the post now there are some more.
I am an 8th grade English teacher, so all of my books are YA with the exception of Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (?). I just finished Asylum by Madeleine Roux and it was great! The Book Thief and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children are some of my faves!
(how do i get to the list?)
Just click the numbers in the widget, there are four books on the first two pages, and two on the second.
I don’t think I’ve read any of those yet. A couple more recent favorites–Midnight Ink, an anthology by a group of great writers that revolves around a tattoo shop in New Orleans; Sarah Addison Allen’s The Peach Keeper.
I read Untold and it was great, I love the writing and the humor. I am currently waiting for my copy of These broken stars to arrive and I believe it will be a great read ๐
Yay ๐ Awesome list Ann! Only read one of those ๐ But hoping to read my copy of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea pretty soon ;p Thank you for the giveaway. <3 I enjoyed many books this year. Favorite might be Cress by Marissa Meyer ๐ Also really loved In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters. <3
I keep seeing These Broken Stars, but I keep hesitating; so if you’re recommending it, I’ll take the dive! As for other books this year, I’ve been dragging out finishing the Jax series because I didn’t want it to end, but I finally did and I adored it (Jax and Deuce are my favorite female characters of all time)! I think Scarlet(Meyer) and Unbroken(Brennan) are two of my favorites of recent months, though Allegiant(Roth), Dream Thieves(Steifvater), World After(Ee), and Gameboard of the Gods(Mead) were other favorites! The Knife of Never Letting Go(Ness) and Pure(Baggot) were really memorable, though calling them favorites doesn’t seem quite right.
Love seeing all these recommendations on here! My reading list grows ever longer…
What a list.. I don’t know where to begin for mine but World After, Bare Assets by M.L. Stephens. Games of Fire, Finding Kia and Revealing Kia by Airicka Pheonix,Sentinel by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Out of your list your making me want to read These broken stars. I’m actually in the middle of Horde and sad to see this series end.
Hope you like the finale! ๐
You are the best book recommender! Name a genre and BOOM! you can give me the name of a great book!
I loved These Broken Stars, This Song Will Save Your Life, The Program, Days of Blood and Starlight, Written in Red (LOVED that one!!) anything by Cara McKenna & Perdition blew me away.
haven’t read these books yet, but a couple of them are in one of my to be read piles.
I’ve read Untold and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. They were enjoyable enough but definitely not favorites. I’m dying to read These Broken Stars.
I have so many books I loved this year. I’ll try not to list ones that have already been mentioned.

Honestly, I have not read or heard of some of the books in the list, but I’ve been eyeing this one “These Broken Stars” a lot. I would love to read that book, as well as “Some Quiet Place” and “Lovely Vicious”.
For recommendations, how can I not recommend Horde? I reviewed that on my blog. I loved Razorland. One of the best series I’ve read.
